Different Charts for Different Questions
Astrology uses various chart types to answer different questions. Your natal chart shows your birth potential, transits show current influences, synastry examines relationships, and predictive charts reveal future trends. Each serves a unique purpose.
Overview
While the natal chart is the foundation, astrology uses many specialized chart types. Relationship charts (synastry, composite) compare two people. Predictive charts (transits, progressions, returns) show timing. Horary charts answer specific questions. Each technique offers unique insights.
9 Astrology Chart Types
Natal Chart
Your birth chart — the cosmic snapshot at your first breath. The foundation of all astrology.
The natal chart (birth chart) is calculated for your exact birth time and place. It shows planetary positions, house placements, and aspects at the moment you were born. This is your cosmic DNA—the starting point for all astrological interpretation. An accurate birth time is crucial for house cusps and the Ascendant.
Transit Chart
Current planetary positions overlaid on your natal chart. Shows present-moment influences.
Transit charts show where the planets are now (or at any given time) in relation to your natal chart. When transiting planets contact natal positions, they activate those energies. Transits are the primary timing technique in astrology, revealing when natal potentials are triggered.
Synastry Chart
Two natal charts compared. Shows how people interact and where they connect or clash.
Synastry compares two natal charts to understand relationship dynamics. Planetary aspects between charts show attraction, compatibility, and potential challenges. Synastry reveals what each person experiences in the relationship—it's not always symmetrical.
Composite Chart
A single chart for a relationship. Shows the relationship as its own entity.
The composite chart creates a single chart by calculating the midpoint between each planet in two natal charts. It represents the relationship itself as a third entity with its own personality and purpose. Composite charts show the destiny and function of the relationship.
Progressed Chart
Your natal chart evolved symbolically. Shows inner development over time.
Secondary progressions advance the natal chart using the formula 'a day for a year.' Your progressed chart shows how you've evolved internally. Progressed Moon changes sign every 2.5 years; progressed Sun every 30 years. These show psychological development stages.
Solar Return Chart
Your annual birthday chart. Sets themes for the year from birthday to birthday.
The Solar Return chart is cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal position—your cosmic birthday. This chart sets the theme for the coming year. The location where you celebrate your birthday can influence your Solar Return chart.
Lunar Return Chart
Your monthly Moon return chart. Shows emotional themes for each lunar month.
The Lunar Return occurs when the transiting Moon returns to its natal position—roughly every 27.3 days. This chart shows emotional themes, needs, and rhythms for the coming month. Lunar returns are useful for understanding monthly emotional cycles.
Horary Chart
A chart for a specific question. The moment of asking reveals the answer.
Horary astrology casts a chart for the moment a question is asked and understood. Using specific rules, the astrologer derives a yes/no answer and details about the situation. Horary is used for finding lost objects, timing events, and understanding specific situations.
Event Chart
A chart for any event or moment. Used for understanding or planning important events.
Event charts can be cast for any significant moment—a business launch, wedding, move, or historical event. Electional astrology uses event charts in reverse: choosing the best time to start something. Any moment can have a chart cast for it.
