The Conversations Between Planets

Aspects are the angles formed between planets in your birth chart. They show how planetary energies combine, conflict, or support each other. A chart with many aspects indicates a dynamic personality; fewer aspects suggest focused energy.

Overview

Aspects are measured in degrees around the zodiac wheel. Each aspect has an orb (allowable deviation) for it to be considered active. Major aspects are the most influential, while minor aspects add nuance. Aspect patterns (like Grand Trines or T-Squares) reveal complex personality dynamics.

7 Astrological Aspects

Conjunction

0° - Planets merge and amplify each other's energy. Powerful and intense.

A conjunction occurs when planets occupy the same degree (or within 8-10° orb). The energies fuse, creating intensity in that area of life. Conjunctions to personal planets are especially significant. They can be harmonious or challenging depending on the planets involved.

Opposition

180° - Planets face off, creating tension that demands integration.

An opposition occurs when planets are across the chart from each other (180° apart, 6-8° orb). This creates an awareness of polarity—you may project one planet's qualities onto others. Oppositions require balance and often play out in relationships.

Trine

120° - Planets in the same element flow together naturally. Gifts and talents.

A trine occurs when planets are 120° apart (6-8° orb), usually in the same element. Trines indicate natural talents and easy energy flow. The danger is taking these gifts for granted. Trines show where life comes easily but may lack motivation for growth.

Square

90° - Planets clash, creating friction that motivates action and growth.

A square occurs when planets are 90° apart (6-8° orb). This creates internal tension that demands resolution through action. Squares are challenging but motivating—they push you to grow. The friction between square planets builds character and strength.

Sextile

60° - Planets offer opportunities that require effort to activate.

A sextile occurs when planets are 60° apart (4-6° orb), usually in compatible elements. Sextiles represent opportunities and potential that require conscious effort to develop. They're gentler than trines and suggest skills you can cultivate.

Quincunx (Inconjunct)

150° - Planets in incompatible signs require constant adjustment.

A quincunx occurs when planets are 150° apart (2-3° orb). The signs involved share nothing—different element and modality. This creates an awkward energy that requires constant adjustment. Quincunxes often relate to health issues or persistent life irritants.

Semi-Sextile

30° - Adjacent signs creating subtle friction and growth opportunities.

A semi-sextile occurs between adjacent signs (30° apart, 1-2° orb). Like quincunxes, the signs are incompatible, creating low-level friction. Semi-sextiles indicate areas of gradual growth and necessary adjustments.
