What Are Aspects?

Aspects are geometric relationships between planets measured in degrees around the zodiac wheel. They show whether planetary energies blend together (conjunction), support each other (trine, sextile), or create tension (square, opposition).

Major Aspects

Conjunction (0°)

Planets at the same degree merge their energies. This is the most powerful aspect. Effect: Intensification, fusion, concentration. Nature: Neutral (depends on planets involved).

Opposition (180°)

Planets directly across from each other create polarity and awareness. Effect: Tension requiring balance, external projection. Nature: Challenging but growth-oriented.

Square (90°)

Planets at right angles create friction and motivation. Effect: Internal tension, drive to overcome obstacles. Nature: Challenging, developmental.

Trine (120°)

Planets in signs of the same element flow together naturally. Effect: Harmony, ease, natural talent. Nature: Supportive, sometimes passive.

Sextile (60°)

Planets in compatible elements create cooperative opportunities. Effect: Opportunity, facilitation, gentle support. Nature: Mildly beneficial, requires activation.

Aspects as Growth Tools

Challenging aspects are developmental, not negative. They indicate where growth happens through effort and integration. Squares show where internal work creates strength. Oppositions reveal what we project onto others. These aspects often correlate with greatest accomplishments.

Common Aspect Patterns

Recognize these important configurations in charts:

  • +Grand Trine - Three planets in trine (triangle shape). Natural talent, sometimes complacency.
  • +T-Square - Two planets in opposition with a third squaring both. Driven, productive tension.
  • +Grand Cross - Four planets forming two oppositions and four squares. Intense but powerful.
  • +Yod (Finger of God) - Two planets in sextile both quincunx a third. Fated feeling, adjustment required.
